High School Students and Science Teachers Understandings and Perceptions on Middle School Biology Units

This study examined (1) high school students understanding on middle school level biology concepts, and (2) both science teachers and high school students perceptions on biology units. 54 middle school science teachers and 127 1st grade high school students were participated in this study. The study results indicated that both students and teachers recognized the genetics unit as the most interest as well as the most difficult. In addition, the genetics unit represented the lowest percentage of correct answers. The students written responses of each question were very similar to the previous studies on misconceptions. Further, about 46% of students mentioned that the most efficient teaching method was experiment, and about 32% of teachers recognized the necessity of development of teaching and learning materials. Also, 61% of teachers mentioned the curriculum needs to be easy and interesting for students to understand, and about 24% of teachers pointed out the importance of connectivity among units
