Cultural Diversity in Linguistic Politeness Strategies between American English and Korean

이 논문의 주요 목적은 영어와 한국어에 있어서 언어적으로 공손함을 사용하는 부분에 있어서의 문화적 유사성과 차이점을 정의하고자 함이다. 친밀함과 나이에 관련한 심리적 거리감과 사회적 지배도가 언어적 공손함을 사용하는데 있어서 유사성 과 차이점을 분류하기 위한 지표로 사용되었다. 29명의 참가자를 대상으로 설문 조사하였고, 17명의 한국인과 12명의 미국인을 상대하였다. 참가자들은 글로 쓰인 대본을 보고 질문을 받았다. 첫 번째 상황은 지나가는 사람에게 어떤 가게의 위치를 물어보는것이었고, 두 번째 상황은 길 안내를 해준 지나가는 사람에게 감사를 표하는 것이었다. 마지막 질문은 그 사람의 감사에 대응하는 정도를 확인하였다. 놀라운 요인은 한국인의 문화가 깃든 언어적 자질로 인식되어지는 아무말 없이 웃기만 하는 것이었으며 감사를 받는 것을 가볍게 거부하는 것이었다. 이 연구의 결과는 미국인과 한국인의 언어적 공손함의 사용이 두 문화에 걸쳐서 모두 보편적인 것이 있기는 하지만 어느 면에서는 문화적 차이를 보인 다는 것을 보여주고자 한다.

The primary aim of this paper is to identify cross-cultural similarities and differences in linguistic politeness strategies between American English and Korean. Psychological distance and social dominance regarding the degree of intimacy and age are allotted for the classification of universality and cultural diversity in linguistic politeness strategies. Participants are a total of 29 subjects; 17 native Koreans and 12 native Americans. The subjects are asked to respond written scripted situations. The first situation is to request a direction of a store to a passer-by, the second is to give gratitude to a passer-by who shows the direction and the last one is to react toward a person s gratitude. Striking factors which are considered to be Korean cultural linguistic features are silent smile and refusal to receive or offering gratitude. The result of the study suggests that linguistics politeness strategies between American English and Korean are universal, but, to some extent, cultural.
