A Study on the Management Status and Improvement of After-School Programs for Special Classes at Elementary Schools in Gwangju Province

This study aims at identifying the management status of after-school for special class at elementary schools in Gwangju and their problems, and developing more reasonable and effective management programs. It targets 87 special education teachers who are in charge of after-school for special class in elementary schools in Gwangju and interviews them with a questionnaire. The data collected through the questionnaire are analysed with a use of frequency analysis on general opinions on the after-class, management status, management effect, problems and countermeasures and to identify the difference according to collective characteristics, it carried χ² test. The main results obtained through the study are presented as follows: First, as a general opinion on after-school for special class, the majority of the subjects answer that they agree with its necessity and expanded management. Second, in management status of the after-class for special class, most of the program which is needed most by the students and actually provided is therapeutic activity. The big problem in decision of programs is to secure finance. Third, in respect to the effect of after-school, therapeutic education activities are the most effective for development talents and special skills, decrease of private education expenses, and caring of students after school. Fourth, the problems in management of after-school are presented as follows: lack of various programs, difficulties in flexible time management and going home, securing instructors appropriate for the students with disabilities, and securing finance for management. To overcome the problems, it presents various plans as follows: opening of various programs through expansion of individual and financial support.
