Nicotine dependence is an important health problem increasing medical morbidity and mortality. Recently, the increased information about the benefit of quitting smoking and the harm of smoking has made the smoking rate decrease in some degree in Korea. The studies about smoking have increased more and more in Korea. However, there are few studies of smoking with psychiatric illness in Korea. Information in other countries suggests that mood disorder may be related to in-creased smoking as well as to increased difficulties in cessation of smoking and a high incidence of mood disorder occurring during smoking cessation attempts. There are three possibility related the mood disorder with smoking. Firstly, some have suggested that such persons use cigarette as means of self-medication of affective symptoms. The alternative possibility is that regular nicotine use increases the likelihood of subsequent mood disorder. A third possibility is that some shared genetic vulnerability independently increases the risk for both mood disorder and smoking. In future, the additional studies related the epidemiology of smoking with psychiatric illness is needed. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate the relatedness of smoking and psychiatric illness.
