Effects of Using Picture-Word Cards and Creative Fairy Tales on the Reading Ability of Children with Mental Retardation

The present study aimed to examine the effects of using picture-word cards and creative fairy tales on the reading ability of children with mental retardation. One child with mental retardation was taught by using picture-word cards and creative fairy tales three times per week for 18 weeks. Before and after the 18-week teaching program consisting of 24 sessions, pre- and post-test were administered, and a formative test was also administered every 6 sessions to monitor the progress of reading ability of the child. The results of analyzing the data from the tests revealed that the program had positive effects on the reading ability of the child. Based on the results, were presented a conclusion and some suggestions for future research.
