A comparative study of language culture and poilteness expressions of Korean-American

It is an universal phenomenon, if we are to consider people s basic wants to form good interrelationships, to express appropriate politeness according to their social relationship in both English and Korean. However linguistic structural devices of such politeness expressions in on society may differ from another. So it is an important factor for an English learner to understand and acquire the correct politeness expressions and Korean language. The purpose of this study is to compare politeness expressions in English and Korean language by presenting materials about concepts, cultural backgroundsm and strustural characteristics of politeness expressions. For this purpose, the contents of this study are as follows, First, reserches about linguistic politeness are overviewed. Second, the present study contrasts the differences of politeness expressions between Korean and English. Third, this study investigates linguistic structural devices in English and Korean language politeness forms. All language have two factors in politeness expressions even though one factor and be salient in language use. These factors and be expressed as volition and discernment in Hill s term. According to these factors, the characteristics of English and Korean politeness expressions are summarized as follows: (1)Korean politeness expressions are constructed by using proper honoricics and by strategic language use. (2)The honorific system of Korean language has developed sophisticated devices through subject honorific, dative referent honorific and addressee honorific. (3)The major feature of English politeness expressions is the use of volitional strategy. Knowledge about proper style and routone formula are also included in the features of English politeness. (4)The English politeness strategies for considering others include positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy and off the record strategy.
