Songs of Indignation or Manbun’ga(萬慣歌) by Cho Ui(曹偉) is the first outstanding work of its kind in the Yi dynasty. These songs give vent to the wrongs suffered by exiles at the hands of their political rivals. The Chonggwajong-gok(鄭瓜亭曲) of Koryo, and Chü Yüan’s verse in China, both seem to furnish background to Cho Ui’s work, which in its turn provides background to Chong Ch’ol’s Songgang Kasa. (松江歌辭). The paper treats his thought, the literary climate of his times, his involvement in the political strife of 1504 and his influence on later authors.
