A study on the commercial spirit of Kaisong merchants

The purpose of this study is to establish the unfolding of Kaisong traders’ developmental history and to revaluate the feature and nature of Kaisong trader spirit’s developmental history. This study has examined closely how the Kaisong trader, started in the Koryo dynasty and formed in the early Yi dynasty, has been inherited to the modern enterpriser from Kaisong, inherited and developed to the managerial ideas such as merchant spirit, enterpriser spirit and managerial philosophy, how they have been transformed and influenced into the managerial philosophy of the modern enterpriser from Kaisong, and how the Kaisnng trader spirit started from the Koryo dynasty bas been transformed and systematized into the modern enterpriser spirit, and established into the managerial philosophical value. This study has performed the method of managerial history and the method of enterpriser history simultaneously. Specifically this study has introduced and adopted the research method of A.H.Cole and the Managerial History Institute of Harvard University, USA which have developed the excellent research method in generating the succeeding process of enterpriser spirit and managerial idea, and the managerial philosophy modern enterpriser. The study on the merchant spirit of Kaisong trader has become the key to solve the problem of Korean merchant spirit formation, and given a significant meaning as it has found the solution to clarify the identification of Korean commercial historical nature by examining the periodization of Korean merchant spirit and defining the obvious feature of the times with the periodization of Kaisong trader’s merchant spirit. The developmental historical periodization of Kaisong trader’s merchant spirit may be recorded as a great contribution that has developed the research in this field a step forward. By this study, the managerial historical periodization of Korean merchant spirit may divide the merchant spirit of Korean Kaisong trader into the 1st quickening period -the merchant spirit of the Koryo dynasty, the 2nd generating period -the merchant spirit of the earlier Yi dynasty, the 3rd growing and forming period in the later Yi dynasty, the 4th testing and declining period which may be divided into the merchant spirit of port opening period and the one of national capital forming period under the rule of Japanese imperalism, and finally the 5th modernizing and maturing period which may be defined as the enterpriser spirit from the early 21th century with Liberation and economic developmental period up to now. This study has concluded that the current the managerial historical viewpoint of Kaisong trader shall be changed, and the enterpriser spirit and managerial idea of enterprisers from Kaisong shall be revaluated and reilluminated. In short, this study has found the following; first, the managerial philosophy of enterprisers from Kaisong has cultivated the patriotism greatly in the national ideological level; second, it has been based on the honesty and credit as an idea for customer; third, it was regarded the manners and faith as the best in the social idea; finally, it has universalized the managerial philosophy to routinize mutual dependence, congratulations and condolences, mutual help spirit based on the justice and personal relationship into the behavioral pattern of enterpriser in the internal and external idea. The research of merchant spirit developmental history of Kaisong trader as th above may find the following expected result and applying method. First, the Korea first research result of ‘Kaisong trader history’ is to be introduced to the academic world, In short, it will contribute to the research of Korean enterpriser history and the managerial history, Second, it will be the basic data to organize the ‘Kaisong trader history’ and ‘Incubating theory from Kaisong’ as a curriculum in the universities home and abroad.
