This study is to investigate the characteristics of Korea’s big business group named ‘Chaebol’. This study has shown that Korean Chaebol is similar to Zaibatsu which operated in Japan prior to World War Ⅱ rather than to Geiretsu. It was found that Zaibatsu and Chaebol demonstrate common characteristics with respect to the background of the business group formation, their market monopoly, similar government relationships. their administrative styles and their capital investment. However, when aspects of management structure and administrative style of them are compared, the Chaebol is an inferior group to Zaibatsu. In addition, with respect to the origin of the Chaebol it was found that the Chaebol group’s characteristics is a direct contrast from other business groups in Asia, which is asserted by Nakagawa as well. Meanwhile, Chaebol has shown the positive phenomena, that is, some Chaebols that have relatively long histories and sound capital investment in comparison to other business groups in Korea, the groups have now diversified into sub-companies and have therefore decentralized many of their operations from their parent groups. From heavy governmental reliance, these groups have diversified into technological development and have changed their administrative structures and styles of management. They change their main impetus from commerce or industry to the financial business In order to be competent in the recent capital liberalism. In sum, today’s Korean Chaebol can be defined as an interim form, which transfer from Zaibatsu business group to Geiretsu one.
