SK group and its position in the history of business management in Korea

SK Group started out as a small sized company, Sunkyung Textiles Co., Ltd., in 1953, and has developed into the fourth largest company and the second largest company next to Samsung Group, in terms of asset value and in terms of market value, respectively, in Korea as of the end of year 2000. In this treatise, the focus of research is on the process of development and characteristics, and the role and position in the national economy of SK Group, which has developed Into not only a major domestic company but also into a world-class corporation, especially on finding out what managerial and economic performances. SK Group brought about from the perspective of the company and from the perspective of the national economy as a whole. Furthermore, this researches purpose is to bring into light and evaluate what influences the group had on the Korean economy and on corporate managers, and the managerial philosophy of the founder. The role of SK Group on the national economy or the groups influence on the national economy is truly enormous, and when we observe into the inner details, positive and negative aspects coexist. In this essay, I looked into the role the group played during the 48 years, since the companies foundation. on the national economy, the influence the group had on both the national economy and other corporations, and the managerial philosophy of the late Jong-hyon Chey, the founder of the group who had led and developed the conglomerate. SK Group influenced the national economy and other corporations in the following areas : 1) Contributed to the development of the economy 2) Upgraded the industrial structure by facilitating the heavy industry and chemical industry 3) Increased exports and acquired stable sources of revenue 4) Contributed to the increase of tax revenue by paying taxes 5) Innovated managerial techniques with the SKMS (SK Management System) and the SUPEX (Super Excellent) 6) Secured and cultivated human resource 7) Had profound influences on other corporations and the nation through the development of technologies I researched the influences the group had on other corporations and the national economy m the above seven areas. According to the research. it was found that from the perspective of the national economy or from the corporate point of view, the role of SK Group and the groups influences in the above seven categories were enormous. The late Jong-hyon Chey was an ardent follower of the market economy. With a managerial philosophy centered on workers, he strived to cultivate capable personnel. For 25 years, as CEO of the group. he completed the vertical integration of the company under the motto of “From petroleum to textiles” and developed the group into a world leader in the areas of energy/chemical industries. During his final years, he nurtured the telecommunication industry in Korea and contributed to the development of the Korean economy as president of the Federation of Korean Industries.
