Traditionally attuned to earthbound existence, Koreans mostly have found it difficult to make a living away from the land. The type of farming pursued has been strictly one of subsistence, the farmer helplessly relying on the aid and cooperation of his neighbers and relatives. Farm production has been geared to community life until the individual has been completely submerged in the community. He is inextricably related to his clan, which in turn has functioned as a unit of the community. This scheme of things has also been favored by the Confucian system, particularly its idea of subordinating the individual to society. Under this system human relations have been meshed with clan genealogy on the one hand and the clan’s standing in the social hierarchy on the other. How did individuals break loose from these multiple ties and how did they strike out on their own? The beginnings of social mobility, the resultant change in behavior pattern and its effects on the community have been studied in terms of institutions and values, and the findings have been incorporated in this paper.
