18세기 한 거자(擧子)의 불경 읽기 - 유만주의 흠영을 중심으로 -

Buddhist Scripture Reading by One Geo-Ja (擧子) in the 18th Century: Focusing on Heumyeong (欽英) by Yu-ManJu (兪晩柱)

이 글은 거자인 유만주가 불경을 읽은 사건에 주목하여 그 특징 및 의의를 논한 것이다. 궁극적으로는 유만주의 삶과 불교의 관계를 규명 하고자 하는 것이다. 분석 대상은 그가 남긴 일기 흠영이다. 우선 유만주는 불경을 읽었을 뿐만 아니라 초록하여 간행하였으며, 본격적으로 연구하였 다. 이와 같은 정밀한 불경 읽기는 그의 박학적 면모 및 사상적 융통성에 기인한 것이다. 다음으로 유만주는 혹세무민의 측면에서 불교를 비판 하였지만 그 사상적 가치에 공감하기도 하였다. 사회교화 및 심법의 측면에서다. 또한 그는 고아 하면서도 다채로운 불경 문장의 특징에 주목하 였으며, 특히 문답법에 의한 전개 방식을 높게 평가했다. 이상 그의 불교관 및 문장에 대한 태도는 유자로서 그의 사상적 면모 및 문학적 관심에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 마지막으로 유만주는 지극한 불운에 직면해 홀로 슬픔을 감당함으 로써 끝내 불도에 귀의하지 않았다. 반불론으로 시작된 그의 불교관이 크게 변하지 않은 것이다. 따라서 독서 편력의 일환으로 시작된 유만주의 불경 읽기는 기본적으로 유자로서 사상 및문장력 확충의 의미가 있다 하겠다.

This article considers the features and meanings of a Geo-Ja (擧子) anecdote about Yu-ManJu (兪晩柱, 1755~1788)’s reading of Buddhist scripture. It illuminates the relationship between Yu-ManJu s life and Buddhism by looking at what he left behind, Heumyeong (欽英). Yu-ManJu not only read Buddhism, but also recorded and published it, and studied it earnestly. Although he criticized it, he also sympathized with its ideological value in terms of social education and Dharma of Mind (心法). Moreover, he focused on the plain and vivid features of Buddhist writings. His attitude toward Buddhism and Buddhist writings seems to have originated from his ideological beliefs and his interest in literature. Yet, Yu-ManJu did not come to believe in Buddhism. Despite being faced with extreme misfortunes, his thoughts on Buddhism, which started from an anti-Buddhist stance, did not change much. Thus, Yu-ManJu s Buddhist reading, which was initially an unbalanced form of reading, helped him to expand his ideology and to develop Confucian writing skills.
