현재 미국에서 시행하고 있는 가족보존 서비스는 지난 10여년간 아동복지계에서 강조하여 온 가족 보존의 중요성을 반영한다. 가족보존 서비스의 효과성에 대한 현재의 평가는 긍정적이지 않지만, 연구자들은 이 서비스의 효과성을 높이기 위하여 서비스의 시행과 평가에서 몇가지 점을 개선할 것을 제안하고있다. 미국의 가족보존 서비스의 경험으로부터 우리는 사회서비스를 시행할 때, 과연 서비스가 가장 필요로 하는 집단에게 시행되고 있는지, 어떠한 서비스의 배합이 어떠한 특성의 클라이언트들에게 어떠한 혜택을 주는지, 본래 의도한 서비스의 목적 이외에 어떠한 효과들이 나타나는지 등을 현실적으로 고려하여야 한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한, 사회서비스를 평가할 때에는 서비스의 효과성을 판단하는 기준에는 문제가 없는지, 적절한 평가방법을 사용하고 있는지 등에 주의를 기울여야 한다는 것을 알 수 있다.
