노인주택이 노인의 삶의 질에 미치는 영향

The effect of retirement housing on the quality of life of the elderly in Korea

최근 노부모와 자녀간에는 분가(分家)를 선호하는 경향이 있으며, 효는 지리적으로 멀리 떨어져 있어도 가능하다고 주장하는 사람들이 많다. 가족의 이러한 새로운 변화에 부응하여 영리 혹은 비영일 단체들은 지금 노인주택을 건설하려는 움직임을 강하게 보이고 있다. 그러나, 학계 일각에서는 과연 노인주택이 노인복지를 증진시킬 것이며, 노부모를 가정에서 모시는 것에 대한 이상적인 대안인가 하는 것에 의문을 갖고 있다. 연구의 가설은 ‘노인주택은 효사상에 부정적인 영향을 줄 것이다’라는 것이다. 본 연구는 노인주택과 효와의 관계를 규명하기 위하여 질적인 조사방법을 사용하여 심층면접을 실시하였다. 1995년 여름에 서울 근처의 Y 노인주택에서 총 입주가 47명 중 17명을 대상으로 면접을 실시하였다. 질문의 내용은 1) 입주동기, 2) 일상생활, 3) 대인관계, 4) 부모-자녀 관계, 5) 운영, 6) 사기(士氣) 등이었다. 연구결과는 가설을 부정하였다. 즉, 노인주택은 효사상을 해치지 않는다는 것이다. 나아가, 노인주택은 어느 정도 노인의 주거욕구를 충족시킨다는 것이 관찰되었다. 한국적 노인주택의 모형은 가족과 지역사회와의 연결성 속에서 이해되어야 하며, 그에 따른 설비와 프로그램을 개발하여야 할 것이다.

Nowadays in Korea, both aging parents and their children tend to prefer a separate living arrangement, and believe that filial responsibilities could be practiced from a distance, too. However, questions remain as to whether the retirement housing really improves the welfare of the elderly and it is an ideal alternative to home care for the elderly. The main hypothesis is that the retirement housing would have negative impact on filial responsibilities which have long been the main ethic of both family and society in Korea. An in-depth interview for the qualitative research was performed to investigate the relationship between retirement housing and filial responsibilities. In the summer of 1995, 17 among 47 residents were interviewed at the Y Retirement Housing near Seoul. The questions were organized into six topics: 1) reasons for entering the retirement housing, 2) daily life, 3) interpersonal relationship, 4) parent-child relationship and 5) management 6) morale. The findings suggested that retirement housing would not mitigate the sense of filial responsibilities, denying the hypothesis. But it was observed that the housing played a role to satisfy the housing needs of a certain portion of older people in Korea. It was suggested that the Korean model of retirement housing should include the concept that the family and the community have easy access to the housing and thus develop both hardware and software appropriate to that concept.
