Theorizing about church social work in Korea and sociology of religion

오늘날 한국 사회복지계에서는 교회사회사업에 대한 관심이 점차 증가하고 있다. 이는 그간 선교에 보다 큰 중점을 두었던 교회가 사회봉사 쪽으로 관심을 돌리기 시작한 것과 맥을 같이 하는 현상이며, 복지국가건설의 과정에서 민간 복지자원의 활용이 중요성을 더해가고 있는 전체 사회적 추세와도 맥을 같이 하는 것이다. 하지만, 한국에서 교회사회사업은 아직 정확한 이론적 틀을 가지지 못한 채 전체 사회와 통합되지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 이러한 상황을 극복하기 위해서는 전체 사회 속에서 종교를 바라볼 수 있어야 한다. 결국, 교회사회사업의 이론화는 전체 사회 속에서 종교를 바라보는 종교사회학적 관점의 수용과 교회 내의 경험축적을 바탕으로 가능할 수 있을 것이다.

Churches are considered as an important social work agent, concerned with utilization of private resources in social welfare system. In recent years, churches have focused on social services rather than on the missionary work. In that context, church social work is requested to establish its disciplinary identity and, at the same time, to have its unique field in the profession. The challenge of church social work is related to four issues: 1) understanding of relationship between religion and science in the perspectives of sociology of religion; 2) integration of the original function of religion and social services in church social work; 3) connection of Christian social welfare function and church social work; 4) proof of the effectiveness of social-religious perspectives in church social work.
