아내폭력 노출이 자녀의 행동 문제에 미치는 영향

The influence of exposure to domestic violence on children’s behavior problems - focused on children’s cognitive appraisal to interparental conflict

이 연구는 가정에서 남편의 아내폭력에 노출된 자녀들이 어떠한 행동문제를 보이는가에 대하여, 특히 부부갈등에 대한 아동의 인지적 평가가 그 과정을 내재하는가에 대하여 살펴보았다. 아내폭력은 남편이 아내에게 행하는 신체적 폭력으로 규정하였으며, 아동의 행동문제는 대표적인 내재화 문제인 우울ㆍ불안과 대표적인 외현화 문제인 공격성에 초점을 맞추었다. 부부갈등에 대한 인지적 평가는 부부갈등에 대한 아동의 대처효용성, 자기비난, 지각된 위협으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 조사대상 아동의 23.3%가 신체적 폭력에 노출된 것으로 나타났으며, 아내폭력에 노출된 아동은 그렇지 않은 아동에 비해 심각한 행동문제를 보이는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 아내폭력에 노출된 아동은 그렇지 아동은 아동에 비해 부부갈등을 보다 부정적으로 인식하는 것으로 나타났으며, 부부갈등에 대한 아동의 인지적 평가가 부정적일수록 아동의 행동문제는 더욱 심각하였다. 특히, 아동의 부부갈등에 대한 인지적 평가는 신체적 폭력 노출이 아동의 행동문제에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 완전매개역할을 하는 것으로 나타나서, 아내폭력 노출이 아동의 행동문제에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 인지적 평가의 중요성이 확인되었다. 이 연구결과는 가정폭력에 노출된 자녀들이 “숨겨진 피해자”라는 사실을 재차 확인하였으며, 따라서 아내폭력에 대한 연구와 개입 대상에 이들 아동을 반드시 포함시킬 필요가 있음이 분명히 밝혀졌다. 또한, 자녀를 위한 개입에 있어서 아동의 인지적 평가의 역할 및 중요성이 적극적으로 반영되어야 할 것이다.

This article assesses the influence of exposure to violence toward their mother from father on children’s behavior problems. It also examines whether the children’s cognitive appraisal intermediates in the process. Among 266 children in this study, 35% are exposed to verbal violence and 23.3% are exposed to physical violence. Children who are exposed to violence exhibit more serious behavior problems and they also make more negative appraisal to parental conflict than children who are not exposed. Especially, the children’s cognitive appraisal perfectly intermediates between the exposure to physical violence and children’s behavior problems. As the result of this study, the fact of children as “hidden victims” of domestic violence is confirmed. Therefore, children should be included in the research and intervention of domestic violence. Various agencies for battered women or male perpetrators could be the first place to provide necessary assistance to victimized children and the importance of children’s cognitive appraisal should be emphasized in the intervention process.
