A Review of Child Maltreatment in the U.S. from a Multicultural Perspective

본 연구는 다문화적 관점에서 미국의 아동학대 문제를 고찰하고자 한다, 이러한 연구목적을 위해, 미국사회의 인구학적 변화과정을 소개하며, 선행된 아동 학대 관련 연구의 문헌을 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 문화적 특성요인과 아동학대와의 관계를 규명하였다. 또한, 아동학대와 관련된 미국의 제도와 법령에 대한 논의를 통해, 미국 사회가 아동학대와 관련해 문화를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 이러한 고찰을 통해, 본 연구는 다양한 하위문화들이 공존하는 미국사회에 있어서, 새로운 관점에 근거한 아동학대에 대한 개념 정립을 도모하고, 이를 기초로 한 사회복지분야에서의 아동학대 문제에 관한 정책적, 실천적 함의를 전달하고자 한다.

This study examines child maltreatment issues in the U.S. in a cultural context. To do so, it presents demographic transitions, reviews previous studies on child maltreatment in the U.S., and illustrates relationships between cultural factors and child maltreatment. Related legal issues are also introduced to better understand how the U.S. society recognizes culture in terms of child maltreatment. Based on these discussions, this study delivers recommendations for defining child maltreatment in a cross-cultural perspective and implications for child policy and clinical practice in social work arena.
