Exploring the Narrative of the Transitional Period of an Adolescent Study Abroad Student

청소년 조기 유학생의 내러티브에 나타난 정체성 전환 연구

This case study explores the narrative of a teenage Korean girl who studied abroad in an English speaking country as an unaccompanied minor, in order to trace her adjustment process to a host country. Furthermore, this study focuses on how her English learning is related to her social and cultural adjustment process. A narrative inquiry was conducted by interviewing the 16-year-old Korean adolescent, Kangmin, who moved alone to the UK for the purpose of English learning once a week for three months. Holistic-content analysis was used to identify themes that appeared repeatedly in the various stages of Kangmin s account. The findings provided insight into her struggle to accommodate herself to her new learning and living environments, in terms of what she gained and lost. In addition, the findings showed that English played a critical role in her accommodation as learning language is an important part of the ongoing cultural social transition.

본 연구는 보호자 없이 조기 유학생활을 하고 있는 16세 소녀, 강민의 내러티브를 통해 사춘기 조기 유학생이 영어 학습을 위해 떠난 해외에서 홀로 겪는 언어적, 문화적, 심리적 어려움과 이를 이겨내고 극복해가는 과정에서 오는 도전과 성장을 전체론적 접근법을 통 해 분석했다. 유학 초기, 언어 장벽과 문화적 이질감, 부모와의 물리적, 심리적 분리에서 오 는 불안감으로 인해 적응과정에서 어려움을 겪었던 강민은 영어와 새로운 문화와 규범을 익히고 청소년에서 성인으로, 외국인에서 유학 이민자로 가는 전환기를 맞는다. 이러한 전 환을 통해 강민이 잃어버린 것들과 새롭게 얻은 것들에 대해 알아보고 이 과정에서 언어의 역할과 부모의 부재가 갖는 의미에 대해 살펴봤다.
