Neighborhood Poverty and Social Exclusion : Does Social Capital Matter?

본 연구는 지역사회 효과에 관한 이론적 논의를 살펴보고, 개인의 사회적 배제에 미치는 지역사회 수준의 빈곤과 신뢰의 맥락효과를 검증하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구방법은 국내 57개 기초 지방자치단체에 거주하는 1,542명에 대한 다층자료를 이용한 위계적선형모형 횡단적 분석이다. 연구결과, 지역사회 빈곤은 개인의 사회적 배제를 설명하는 데에 있어 지역사회가 형성하는 맥락효과라기보다는 거주민의 사회경제적 구성효과로 설명되었으며, 신뢰는 지역사회의 맥락효과로 유의미하였다. 이와 같은 결과는 지역사회 역량의 효과를 실증적으로 뒷받침하는 것이며, 향후 사회복지 분야에서의 공간적 단위 연구의 필요성을 제기한다.

This study examines the theories of neighborhood effects and verify the effects of neighborhood poverty and social trust on individual-level social exclusion. Methods consisted of a multi-level analysis of social isolation and perceived welfare resources, using a survey data of 1,540 individuals who are nested within 57 local counties in South Korea. Results show that neighborhood poverty was not associated with social exclusion after controlling for individual-level predictors, but the effect of social trust was very strong and remained as a contextual effect. Also, social trust at the neighborhood-level explain the level of perceived welfare resources. It is concluded that neighborhood effects can be assessed empirically and there is at present need for further investigation of contextual factors for macro practice in social work.
