Chomsky defines the Empty Category as having no intrinsic content via move - alpha and thinks of it as playing a significant roles in the GB - syntax. We might say that the systematic study of the real properties and roles of ECs in the GB - syntax will make actual contributions to the development of the syntactic theory. With respect to the points, we tried to treat with Chomsky’s ECP and to examine the problems resulted from the previous analysis through Huang(1982), Lasnik and Saito(1984). They demonstrated the distributions of empty categories very well but there are a variety of problems, for example, in island - constaints, subjacency codition and affect - alpha. In order to adequately examine the empty category, Chomsky(1986b) introduced the notion of “Barrier” but by introducing disjoint applications into the comparision of barriers, was inevitable to suggest the revised barrier theory, so his analysis helped to solve some residual problems with the intermediate trace within Lasnik & Saito(1984) in the GB - syntax via the empty category principle by means of a link of chain. But there remains many problems unsolved. Rizzi(1990), introducing the relativized minimality condition, analyzed the above problems. Accordingly, we tried to solve analyzing the relations between the empty categories and their barriers by proposing “A non - pronominal empty category must be properly head - governed”. And we suggest that some residual problems which need further studies be analyzed by the aspect of functionalism in future.
