Psychological predicates raise serious problems for any principles attempted to constrain the mapping of thematic representations into initial syntactic configurations. The purpose of this paper is to compare the theta roles of the arguments saturated by English and Korean psych-predicates, providing common (or distinct) syntactic properties at D- or S-Structure. The theoretical mechanisms assumed here are Theta-, Case-, Binding-and Control-theory in GB frame, as well as Egrativity Hypothesis suggested by Burzio(1986) and many others. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows: (1) Psych-predicates discharge 2 theta roles, Theme and Experiencer, which compose a kind of double object construction at D-Structure. (2) Binding of anaphors and passive constructions show that the two arguments are licensed VP-internally and the [Spec, IP] position is non-thematic. (3) Binding and Control facts show that Exp is more prominent than Theme with c-command relation between the two arguments. This is supported by the fact that Generative Semanticists suggested the following hierarchy: Experiencer〉Theme. (4) What appears to be transitive predicates in PPC are , in fact, intransitive predicates showing similar behaviors with middle or ergative verbs. So Burzio s generalization holds here. This is sup ported by the following two facts: i) in Middle and Modern English, Experiencers were assigned with dative case, ii) Dutch, German, Italian as well as Korean(Japanese) have many sentances with dative Exp. (5) The peculiar features found in Korean PPC are attributed to the strong ergativity of the Koean psych-predicates. The PPC double subject constructions are different from the non-PPC double subject constructions in that the former have the structure, [IP NP1 [V tnp1 [V NP2 [ tnp2 V ]]]], while the latter, [DIP NPl [IP NP2 [V tnp2 [V]]]]. In conclusion, PPCs of English and Korean reconstructed at D-Structure have many common properties, which can be explained in GB framework. They also show strong ergativity which affect English dative constructions and Korean double subject constructions.
