The purpose of this article is to study the interpretation and the constraints of the cataphor in the context and in the discourse by pragmatic approaches. Since the motivation for the cataphor lies in the discourse. The cataphor is not a matter of a sentence grammar to be explored with the concepts of syntax and semantics, but instead, a feature of the discourse requiring to be analyzed pragmatically. Reinhart s c-command principle is possible only in the sentence grammar that a pronoun may not c-command its antecedent. The semantic aspects play an important role to account for the anaphor. Intonational factors can permit an anaphor to be interpreted as bound even in the absence of a c-commanding antecedent. The reflexive caki can be used in the inclusive domain of a discourse. Nonlinguistic approach by psychological phenomena, such as logophoricity and empathy, can account for the cataphoric relations in the nature of the complement taking logophoric verbs and in the observer s empathy of the sentence with reflexive aaki. An observer s empathy is important for the well-formedness condition in the case of the lst person antecedent for caki interpretation and in the long distance anaphora. The protagonist shown in the cataphora sometimes shows the effect of the climax in the context. The semantic property assigned to a referent is conveyed by a portion of the dis- course. The cataphor functions as a marker of pragmatic subordination, which means that arguments in the cataphor should rely on pragmatic rather than purely syntactic evidence.
