An Intergrated Government

The government is divided into a head government, a proper head government and an antecedent government. This division is attributed to the necessity to examine the entity of traces. All the government definitions are based on the fact that the governor and the governee must be in local relation. The local relation is preserved just in case no barrier intervenes between the governor and the governee. The barriers consists of the XP barriers and the Minimality barriers. I suggest that the XP barriers be eliminated by a H-marking(Chomsky 1987) and a categorial agreement(Yafei Li 1993). The H-marking and the barrier in terms of categories are defined as follows: (1) a. γ is a barrier for β if γ is not H-marked. b. α H-marks β iff β is the complement of α. (2) The complete projection of a lexical head X is a government barrier iff a. it is the complement of a head Y, and b. X and Y do not have the same category. (Yafei Li 1993 : 7) The effect of strong islands at noncomplement positions is explained by the H-marking. And the barrier in terms of categories is to explain weak islands at complement positions. I believe that the Relativized Minimality (Rizzi 1989) deserves to be sustained on condition that a new referential indextation in Rizzi(1992) is followed. Rizzi(1992:368) assumes that X can carry a referential index only if it bears an argumental Theta-Lole on some level of representation. Rizzi(1992)’s assumption explains the reason that argument traces must be antecedent governed, not bound. But the existing governments are deficient in a simplicity and an unity in that they have several forms and definitions. To avoid the complexity and to pursue the unity, I introduced an integrated government: (3) α X-governs β if α c-commands β and three is no barrier for β c-commanded by α.(X=head or antecedent.) The integrated government comprises the government, the head government, the proper head government and the antecedent government, so it resuits in the simplicity and the unity being pursued in UG.
