This research explores the perceptual grounds for a regional community in Northeast Asia. Using the AsiaBarorneter 2003 Sveys, us research exarnines whether and how the national identity of citizens in a region affects their regional identity and whether and how transnational activities prornote their regional idencation. πle test results reveal the exclusive nature of national identity of Norleast Asians: those who have a strong national identity in the region are less likely to have an Asian identity. More interestingly, this research finds lat transnational contact does not automatically promote regional identity. ßased on these findings, it is suggested at rather 1an promoting simple transnational interactions, eradicating exclusive nationalist antagonism is necessY to facilitate regional identity, which is a prereqsite for the creation of a regional comrnuy such as the E.U., in Nor1east Asia.
