A Study on the Learning Organization of School Organization as a Basis on Knowledge Management

In this rapidly changing social environment, an organization is required to further improve its capabilities through self-learning to maintain its existence and remain more competitive. In particular, a school organization is formed as a combination of different groups - including teacher, student, and administrator groups - and needs to share and spread knowledge among those groups. Accordingly, this study examines the definitions and characteristics of knowledge and knowledge management and of learning organizations and then presents an approach to turning a school into a learning organization based on knowledge management. The proposed approach includes the following five dimensions: (1) building a knowledge network in the school organization, (2) introducing a mentoring program, (3) improving the image for learning, (4) unlearning and experimental spirit, and (5) developing integrated thinking. To make a school a learning organization based on knowledge management, the plans for reformation should be not near-sighted or short-term, but comprehensive and thorough; and as a result such transformation of a school organization into a learning organization will contribute to increasing the school s competitiveness.
