Model for Collaborative Learning in Multi-cultural Music Education

In contemporary society, physical distance in international relationship diminished dramatically due to advancement in transportation, communication and media. The world has become one global village. Contacts with different cultures and ethnic groups have become common, and people havemany opportunities to experience various cultures. Anew paradigm of multi-cultural education is required to keep abreast with influx of new information and cultures. Music can be an excellent tool to practice multi-cultural education. Unlike other subjects, music uses non-verbal medium, which can be highly effective in internalizing goal of multi-cultural education. In other words, multi-cultural music education can be a way of practicing live music education, helping students to absorb diversity of culture. However, in reality, such education is hard to practice due to lack of specific teaching-learning models and educational materials. This research discussed necessity of multi-cultural music education, and analyzed high school music textbook of the seventh national curriculum. The research also suggested strategies for collaborative learning of world folksongs that are richest in multi-cultural elements among subjects in high school music textbook. Practice of multi-cultural music education facilitates students to accept cultural diversity. The model is expected to have educational effect that guides students to adopt uniqueness of different cultures and to acquire wisdom and understanding to live with their contemporaries in the world.
