Using a Simulation of Political and Economic Development to Explore the Concepts of Globalization

Examines how a simulation of political and economic development can be used to address some of the pedagogical challenges associated with teaching about the concepts of globalization. The study uses a one-group pretest-posttest design, involving twenty-six (n=26) preadolescent students and an online simulated world. In the simulated world, learners led individual countries by strategizing and making economic and political decisions. After using the simulation for eight two-hour sessions, the results found a significant positive change in participants’ understanding of global competence, as well as changes in their interest in the social studies themed simulation. Motivation for social studies more broadly, however, did not change. Implications for educators and designers are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.
