Re-Examination of the Six Camps of Monks (Bhiksus) in the Mahāvagga

육군비구(六群比丘, Chabbaggiyā)는 부처님 재시 당시 존재 하던 비구들의 집단이었다. 그 집단은 각각 두 명의 대표 비구가 이끄는 세 개의 무리였으며, 그 전체 규모는 1,500명 정도였다. 하지만 중국 전승에서 육군비구는 단지 6명이라는 인식이 강하 고, 우리의 일반적인 인식 또한 그렇다. 이 논문에서는 MV에 나타난 육군비구의 에피소드를 검토해보고, 그 구성원에 대하여 조사하였다. 또한 그들이 단지 6명이 아니라 거대한 무리였다는 가정 하에서 ‘육군비구’라는 용어에 대한 인식의 전환을 모색하였다. MV에 나타난 육군비구는 불특정 다수의 집단이므로 다음과 같은 검토 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 육군비구라는 용어는 누구나 그들과 같은 행동을 할 수 있다는 가능성을 내포한다. 둘째, 육군 비구라는 표현은 ‘어떤 비구’라는 표현과는 달리 실제로 일어난 사건을 전제로 하기 때문에 보다 현실적이다. 셋째, 육군비구에 대한 에피소드는 동일한 사건에 대해 조금씩 내용을 바꾸어 반복되는 서술 방식이기 때문에 해당 계율의 취지를 더욱 강하게 전달한다. MV에 나타난 육군비구에 대한 에피소드는 이처럼 누구나 범할 수 있는 계율에 대해 다양한 사례를 제시하여 그 취지를 전달한 다는 측면에서 굉장히 효과적인 계율의 서술 방식이라 할 수 있다.

he Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) existed monks groups in the Buddha s contemporary. These camps had two representative monks who each lead three groups and the total population is 1,500. The Six Camps of Monks, however, according to the transmission of China, are merely represented as only six monks and thus Korean academy are inclined into almost the same opinion. The purpose of this article is to explore the episodes on the Six Camps of Monks in the Mahāvagga and analyzes the characteristic of each member of those. Through this process, I would argue that those are not just six members rather but huge six camps and therefore understanding the term of the Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) should be shifted. The Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) in the Mahāvagga are characterized the unanimous majority of groups and I conclude the followings. First of all, the term the Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) implies the possibility that anyone can perform just as those monks. Secondly, the expression of the Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) is different the expression an any monk an unanimous monk because the former is based on actual occurred episodes which is more specific and particular. Thirdly, the episodes about the Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) in the Mahāvagga are repeated with a little bit changing and thus, the meaning of each precept is strappingly transmitted into readers. By illustrating of various examples which everyone can violate precepts, therefore, the episodes of the Six Camps of Monks (Chabbaggiyā) in the Mahāvagga could be effectively descried in terms of representing the purpose of the Buddhist precepts
