금강경의 핵심논리와 그 해석

The Mind of Purity and the logic of denial on the Diamond Sutra

금강경을 범어로 Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra라고 표기한다. Vajracchedikā는 ‘무엇이든지 잘라버릴 수 있는 것’의 의미이며, Prajñāpāramitā는 ‘더없이 完全한 智慧’를 뜻한다. 따라서 ‘금강경’은 일체의 상(相, saṃjñā)을 벼락처럼 찰나에 잘라서 제거해 버림으로써 ‘더없이 完全한 智慧’를 증득하게 하는 최고로 고귀한 經이라는 뜻이다. 그런데 세존의 깨침은 ‘緣起法’을 깨달아 성불하셨다. 연기법은 온갖 욕망과 번뇌를 멸절시킴으로써 더없이 淸淨한 마음의 거울에 비친 온 우주의 實相이다. 金剛經은 이러한 진리를 깨닫는 마음을 ‘淸淨心’이라고 찬양하면서, 육바라밀의 실천을 통하여 집착하지 않는 ‘깨끗한 마음’을 회복할 것을 강조하고 있다. 이러한 청정심을 회복하기위해서 금강경은 불교의 중요한 문제인 上求菩提와 下化衆生을 어떻게 해야 하는가를 자세하게 반복해서 설명하고 있다. 불교의 중요한 본질은 깨침과 그 깨침에 입각한 중생구제라고 할 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 이 논문에서는 金剛經의 主題와 ‘卽非의 論理’ 그리고 ‘眞俗二諦’에 관한 철학적인 사상을 살펴본 뒤에 ‘主要經句의 검토와 해석’ 등을 다루었다. 금강경은 언어를 통하여 진리를 설하면서도 그 언어의 한계를 인식하여 또다시 그 언어를 부정해버리는 ‘卽非의 論理’로써 언어를 초월한 깨달음에의 체험을 실현시키고자 하는 경이라고 말할 수 있다. 이러한 관점에서 금강경의 언어는 禪의 話頭와 같은 역할을 하고 있는 것으로 생각한다.

The Diamond Sūtra is transcribed into Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra in Sanskrit. Vajracchedikā stands for eliminating all delusions. Prajñāpāramitā means the Perfection of Wisdom. Consequently, the Diamond Sūtra represents the most noble Sūtra which makes us attain the Perfection of Wisdom by eliminating all delusions such as the four illusions of the ego at that very moment like a stroke of lightning. By the way, the enlightenment of Sakyamuni seems to be the Dharma of pratitya-samutpada which means interdependent arising. The Dharma of pratitya-samutpada represents the nature of reality as to the universe which reflects on our pure mind attained by removing all delusions. Admiring the mind of purity which makes us enlighten the Dharma, the Diamond Sūtra stresses the need of recovering the pure mind unsupported by practising the six perfections. In order to recover the mind of purity, the Diamond Sūtra demonstrates in details both the way to elevate ourselves by aiming at the attainment of enlightenment and the way to save sentient beings from suffering. In short, the essence of Buddhism is said to teach both the way to attain the enlightenment and the way to save sentient beings. This paper deals with the topics, the logic of denial, the ultimate aspect of truth and the secular aspect of truth, and the explanation of the main passages on the Diamond Sūtra. Though the Diamond Sūtra explains in details the ultimate aspect of truth by a verbal picture, as it cannot transcend the limit of speech, it cannot but deny the speech through the logic of denial. The logic of denial on the Diamond Sūtra seems to lead us to enlighten the unspeakable aspect of truth. From this point of view, the logic of denial on the Diamond Sūtra seems to play an important role such as a topic of Seon.
