『摩訶止觀』의 體相에 관한 고찰

Contemplation on body and image of Mahajigwan

지의는 『법화경』과 『대품반야경』 및 『대지도론』 등의 불교 여러 경전과 논서를 근거로 해서 불교의 참된 뜻을 규명하였다. 특히 『법화경』의 교상을 통해 인도에서 전래되어온 禪과 止觀에 의한 실천행을 만들었다. 또한 지의는 『법화경』을 시작으로 『대지도론』 등의 불교 여러 경론에 기초해서 불타의 진실한 뜻을 구명하고 결국은 총합불교를 확립하게 되었다. 지의 이전에는 교학면에 비중을 두고 실천법문에는 중점을 두지 않았었다. 그래서 지의는 그 폐풍을 시정하고 참된 불교를 대승보살도로서 확립해가기 위하여 새의 두 날개와 수레의 두 바퀴 같이 敎觀雙修의 입장을 새롭게 모색하고 결국 확립하였다. 이렇게 해서 완성한 것이 『법화경』의 교상을 설한 『법화현의』와 『법화문구』이며 『법화경』의 관심을 설한 『마하지관』이었다. 『마하지관』은 번쇄하고 복잡해서 그 핵심적인 체계를 파악하기가 쉽지 않다고 평가되어 있다. 그렇지만 모든 실천론의 완성이고 가장 중요한 내용을 담고 있기 때문에 수행자나 지도자에게 꼭 필요한 책으로 평가된다. 특히 『마하지관』의 제3장 ‘止觀의 體相을 해석함’에는 천태지관에 관한 중요한 개념들이 敎相, 眼智, 境界, 得失이라는 4가지로 기술되어 있다. 따라서 이 장을 통해 천태지관의 핵심적인 사상을 배울 수 있으며 남방과 북방의 수행적인 차이점을 비교분석할 수 있는 내용을 가지고 있다고 생각된다.

Jieui examined the true meaning of Buddhism using many scriptures and discourses as basis. In particular, he made implementation of virtue and jigwan from India through the teaching of ‘Beobhwagyeong.’ Moreover, Jieui examined the sincere meaning of Buddha based on many courses and as a result, he established aggregate Buddhism. Before him, teaching was regarded as important but practical Buddhist writings were not focused. Therefore, Jieui corrected the wrong doing and searched new positions of the true Buddhism to establish as Mohayana Buddhism like two wings of a bird and two wheels of a wagon, and he finally achieved it. As such, ‘Mahajigwan’ was completed. ‘Mahajigwan’ is assessed as complex and uneasy to understand the core system. However, it contains the most important content and complete of all practical theory which is required for all trainees and masters. In particular, in the third chapter ‘Interpretation of body and image by Jigwan’ of ‘Mahajigwan’ has four important concepts as gyosang, anji, gyeonggye, deuksil. Therefore, we could learn the core idea of Cheontaejigwan in this chapter and compare and analyze the difference of training between north and south.
