대승불교적 견지에서 본 宗敎間·文化間 세계평화운동

Consideration for Global Interreligious and Intercultural Peace Movement from Mahayana Buddhist Perspective: The Coalition for Initiative for a UN Decade for Peace and Practice of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva of Avatamsaka-sutra

현대 다종교·다문화 특성을 지닌 지구촌 상황과 평화의 위기를 살펴본 뒤에, 인류 모두의 행복에 필수적이며 공동과업인 세계평화운동의 하나로서, 현재 유엔 및 종교계의 공동 협력계획으로 추진되는 디케이드(Decade)의 배경과 내용 및 그 실현 주체로서 코얼리션(Coalition)의 구성 과정과 향후 역할을 소개하였다. 이어서 세계 상황을 불교적으로 해석하고, 거기에 적용할 불교적 이념과 실행방법으로서『화엄경』의 잡화엄식 개념과 상징적 비유를 세상에 적용할 수 있도록 설명해 보였고, 아울러 법계연기와 보현행업을 중심으로 화엄사상과 수행을 고찰하였으며, 화엄삼매와 선수행의 특성을 개괄했다. 간화선 방법을 사회적으로 응용해 보면서 이시대의 화두로서 ‘어떻게 세계평화를 이룰 것인가?’를 제시하고, 우리 모두 평화사업에 매진할 필요성을 검토해 보았다. 세계평화를 위한 디케이드와 코얼리션이 현재 최선의 대안으로 논의되고 있는 터에, 평화의 종교로서의 불교와 그 전통을 담지하는 불교인, 특히 대승불교를 표방하는 한국불교인들은 화엄업과 같은 전통적 지혜와 자비행을 수행하며 평화실현을 화두로 삼아 솔선수범하여 세계평화건설을 주도할 사명과 역할을 다해야 하리라고 본다.

As a background in the introduction, the author first reviewed the critical situation of peace in the global village, where various conflicts have been continuing so far, concerning with multireligious and multicultural reality as a characteristic of modern world. Then he reminded the basic concept of peace, in terms of good relationship among whatever beings exist together interdependently, through common sense as well as in a Buddhist perspective. Secondly, he investigated the recent development of the Initiative for a UN Decade of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace 2011-2020 (or DECADE), which is aimed at promoting partnership between UN member states, UN agencies as well as religious communities, spiritual movements, organizations representing indigenous traditions and other pertinent value-based civil society organizations to advance sustainable peace. Appreciation of the Coalition for the DECADE as an executive body of the peace initiative was followed. Thirdly, he suggested ideas of Dharma-dhātus and the vows and practices of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva as a representative of Avatamsaka-sutra to the DECADE and Coalition for proper spiritual and practical application. He also discussed about Seon, a traditional meditative practice of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, as a relevant way to the peace movement. Finally, he asked people of Buddhist community to take a role and responsibility for the global peace movement.
