영아의 하나의 경험(an experience) 들여다보기

‘An Experience of an Infant and a Toddler

본 연구는 영아를 ‘비완결성’과 ‘완결성’을 동시에 가진 존재로 보고, Dewey의 ‘하나의 경험’이라는 렌즈로 영아의 일상경험을 들여다봄으로써 그간의 ‘영아는 미완성적인 존재’라는 인식에서 벗어나 영아의 ‘완결성’에 주목하고자 하였다. Dewey는 우리 주변의 환경과 끊임없는 상호작용 속에서 이루어지는 일상 경험이 충만과 완성을 가지며 두드러지게 부각될 때 ‘하나의 경험’에 이르게 된다고 한다. 이 연구에서 영아인 햇님이와 달님이의 ‘하나의 경험’은 각각 두 가지씩 드러나는데, 햇님이의 경우는 ‘혼자 일어서기’와 ‘걷기’가, 달님이의 경우는 ‘달팽이 오리기’와 ‘친구 별이와의 소꿉놀이’가 그것이었다. 이들의 하나의 경험은 ‘완성에서 오는 강렬한 기쁨’, ‘목적이 있는 반복과 몰입’, ‘갈등에 의한 재구성’, ‘완성이 만들어 내는 새로운 목표’라는 공통적인 양태를 가지고 있었다. 이러한 양태는 경험의 우연성(혹은 상황의존성)과 시간성이라는 특징을 가지고 있으며, 이는 영아가 그들의 경험 속에서 스스로 판단하고 반성적 사고를 하며 그들의 삶을 적극적으로 구성해나가는 주체자임을 확인시켜준다. 이렇게 주체자로서 영아를 드러내는 본 연구의 연구과정은 교육에 있어 귀기울임과 그것의 가시화 과정인 교육적 기록작업이 중요함을 함의한다.

This study begins with understanding infants and toddlers as not only becoming also being . It aims at revealing completeness and themselves of infants and toddlers by looking at their daily life through the lens of An experience introduced by Dewey. Dewey states that An experience is one of our daily experience which is remarkable as we feel fulfillment and consummatory in it. For the aim of this study, daily life of one infant and one toddler was observed and analyzed. Their An experience has four common aspects which are intense pleasure of consummatory , aimful repetition and immersion , reconstitution as the consequence of conflict , a new goal from consummatory . These aspects have two features contingency and temporality , which show that infants and toddlers are competent agents who can construct their life experience by themselves with active decision-making and reflective thinking. The procedure of this study in order to illuminate infants and toddlers as active agents implies that listening to children and pedagogical documentation are important in education.
