고등교육 분야의 지속가능성 연구에 대한 메타분석 -Journal of Sustainability in higher education을 중심으로-

A Meta-Analysis of Sustainability Research in Higher Education

본 연구는 사회과학적 메타분석을 통해 고등교육 분야의 지속가능성 연구에 대한 전체적인 조망을 시도하고, 이를 통해 연구주제와 연구영역 등 관심의 초점을 분석하여 그 동안 진행된 연구의 성과들을 평가한 뒤, 앞으로 관심을 두어야 할 영역과 주제 등 학문영역의 미래지향적 방향성에 대해 논하고자 하는 목적을 갖고 출발했다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 Journal of Sustainability in higher education에 게재된 논문 125편을 분석대상으로 삼아 연결망 분석기법을 이용, 연구목적, 연구주제, 연구대상, 연구자와 인용자간 연결구조 및 특성, 연구대상 국가 등으로 나눠, 그 연구성과를 평가하고, 발전적 방향성을 제시하고자 했다. 연구결과, 고등교육 분야의 지속가능성 연구들이 취하고 있는 연구주제와 연구목적은 실천적 방식들을 구체적으로 탐색하는 분야에 집중되고 있는 반면 이론적 정립을 시도한 기초 연구들이 상대적으로 빈약한 양상을 보이고 있었다. 또 연구자 및 인용자간 연결망 분석 결과, 연구자간 연결 정도는 무척 낮으며, 이들이 학문공동체로서 하나의 응집된 연결고리를 갖지 못한 채 동일 주제 영역에서 개별 학자들이 다양한 연구활동을 전개하고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 연구목적과 연구방법의 경우 가장 중심을 차지하는 것은 소개와 사례연구였다. 이상의 결과를 종합하면, 고등교육 분야의 지속가능성 연구가 보이는 특성은 학문의 다양하고도 실험적인 발전을 고려할 때, 보다 다양한 경로를 통해 연구의 성과들이 도출되고, 이를 검증될 수 있는 신뢰성 있고 타당성 있는 후속 연구들이 이어져야 할 필요성이 제기된다고 할 수 있다.

With using meta-analysis, especially network analyses, this study reviewed 125 academic papers regarding sustainability in higher education examined by International scholars during 2000 to 2006. Data used in this study is limited to Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. This study classified the papers into a series of categories such as research theme, goal of research, relations of citing/cited pairs and methodologies, nations targeted in study. Results suggested the four insightful findings, 1) research theme and goal of research have been concentrating upon exploring practical problem, such as development of effective education model, solution of issues, but lacking of theoretical study relatively. 2) Relations of citing/cited pairs seem not to forming academic community (school) considering the citing/cited frequency and their structure. 3) Most of research method in papers have used to qualitative method, especially case study. 4) Nations targeted in study were skewed in some nations, such as United of America and England. Such results suggest that sustainability researchers in higher education must seek for diversity, credibility and validity testified of research.
