사이버대학생의 중도탈락 결정요인에 관한 연구

Study on the Determinants of Student Drop-Out in Online Universities

사이버대학이 직면하고 있는 가장 심각한 문제 중에 하나는 학생들의 중도탈락이다. 본 연구의 목적은 사이버대학생들의 재등록에 긍정적 또는 부정적으로 영향을 미치는 요인들을 밝혀내어 궁극적으로 중도탈락을 예방하기 위한 제언을 하고자 하는 것이다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 “사이버대학생의 재등록은 학습자요인, 교육요인 외 학습전략과 성취도에 영향을 받는가?”라는 연구문제를 설정하고 사이버대학생의 재등록여부를 종속변수로 학습자의 성별, 직업, 입학유형(신입 또는 편입), 수강학점, 이수학점, 전 학기 평점을 독립변수로 로지스틱 회귀분석을 시행하였다. 분석결과, 사이버대학교에 입학한 후 학생들의 재등록률은 한 학기가 지난 후 가장 많이 떨어져 약 20%의 학생들이 등록을 하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이전 대학생활 경험(편입생)과 적절한 수강신청 학점 및 높은 평점은 재등록에 긍정적 영향을 주고 있었다. 이와 같은 연구결과는 사이버대학생들은 대부분 직업을 가지고 있기 때문에 입학 직후 높은 학습의욕으로 많은 수의 과목이나 어려운 과목을 수강한 경우, 업무와 병행하기 힘든 과도한 학습 부담을 초래하고 학습 성 취감을 떨어뜨려 결국 학업을 중단하거나 포기할 가능성이 높아진다는 것을 시사한다. 이런 현상은 편입생보다 신입생에게 빈번하게 나타나고 있었다. 이에 본 연구는 중도탈락을 예방하기 위하여 사이버대학교는 학생들이 적절하게 수강신청을 하고 학습 성취감을 느낄 수 있도록 입학 후 특히 1년간 세심한 학습지 원을 제공할 필요가 있다고 제안한다.

It has been indicated that one of the main difficulties in online education is a high drop-out rate. This study is intended to identify factors that increase or decrease enrollment in online universities in attempt to help students maintain motivation and continue their education. This study is addressed using a logistic regression model in which student enrollment is predicted by several variables. The results show that about 20 percent of students failed to register for a second semester. Student registration was positively influenced by prior college experience (enrollee), numbers of credits, and high GPA. Considering that most current students also have jobs, I suggest that online universities should focus on supporting new students so that they are able to study while working full-time.
