The purpose of this study is to examine the nonlinear relationship between organizational tenure and job satisfaction of new employees (i.e., newcomers). Specifically, this study seeks to show that a U-shaped curve describes the job satisfaction of a newcomer, which decreases after joining, but is alleviated after a certain point. In addition, this study predicts that this temporal change in job satisfaction differs depending on newcomer s extraversion. Analyzing a five-wave balanced panel data for 459 individuals and 2,295 observations in South Korea, the results showed that newcomers’ job satisfaction decreased after joining an organization but gradually increased later. In addition, a decline in job satisfaction after joining an organization (i.e., a hangover effect) is more severe for more extraverted newcomers. Based on our results, we discuss theoretical and practical implications and future research directions.
