노인 학습자의 대중 인문학 교육 체험에 관한 연구 : Van Manen의 현상학적 연구 방법을 활용하여

A Phenomenological Study on Older Adults Lived Experiences of Liberal Arts Education

노인의 인구비율의 급격한 상승과 함께 개인의 삶에서 노년기가 길어지면서 건강하고 보람찬 노년기를 보낼 수 있는 방안에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 이와 함께 최근 들어 행복한 삶을 위한 방안으로 인문학 교육에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 인문학 교육의 핵심가치인 인간 개인의 삶의 의미 및 성장이라는 핵심 주제에 따라 노인 대상 대중 인문학 교육과 관련한 연구가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 D대학의 인문학 강좌에 참여하고 있는 70대 이상의 노인 7인을 선정하여, 심층적 면담을 통해 노인 학습자들의 대중 인문학 교육 체험의 본질 및 노인 에게 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 하였다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위한 연구방법은 van Manen의 해석학적 현상학 방법론에 따라 노인 학습자들의 생활세계를 확인하였으며, 그에 따른 본질적 주제를 분석하고자 하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 노인 학습자의 대중 인문학 체험의 본질적 주제는 현재의 삶에 만족감을 누리는 체험, 타인들과의 공동체적 유대감 형성의 체험, 다가올 미래에 대한 희망을 품는 체험으로 분석되었다. 참여자들은 대중 인문학 교육 체험을 통해서 자신의 과거의 모습을 돌아보는 기회를 갖게 됨으로서 현재의 자신의 삶을 재해석하게 되어 현재의 삶을 만족 하게 되었으며, 타인과의 관계를 통해서 긍정적인 변화를 경험하게 되었다. 또한 대중 인문학 교육 체험을 통해서 배움이라는 것에 즐거움을 경험하였으며, 이러한 경험은 미래의 삶에 원동력을 만들어 낼 정도의 행복과 즐거움을 준다는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 비록 노화가 되어 신체적으로 불편하고, 인지적 능력이 저하되지만, 그들에게 새로운 역할이 주어지면 할 수 있다는 것을 보여 줌으로써 퇴행을 하는 노년 기가 아닌, 새로이 시작할 수 있다는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다.

Because the proportion of old people in the population is rising sharply, there is a growing interest in how to live meaningfully and healthily in old age. In addition, liberal arts education is receiving attention as a guide for a happy life. Liber arts education, of which core values are the meaning of life and development, is needed now more than ever. The purpose of this study was to discover the essence of public humanities education for old adult learners and the way of influence of liber arts education on older adults. This study conducted in-depth interviews with 7 people aged over 70 who took liberal arts courses in D University. In order to analyze the essential theme of this study s participants experiences, this study employed van Manen’s phenomenological approach as a study method. The life-world of participants’ experience of liberal arts education was analyzed. Experiencing the satisfaction of present life , experiencing community bond formation , and experiencing hope for the future were discovered. By studying liberal arts, participants got to look back on their past and reinterpreted their current life, which led them to a satisfying life. They also saw the positive change in the relationship with others. Furthermore, they found the joy of learning through public humanities education and recognized that the learning experience gave them happiness and pleasure enough to become a strong motive of life. This study showed that older adults can achieve a new goal with taking a new role and the term of older adulthood can be a new beginning.
