A Study on Intertextuality of 『Othello』 and 『Season of Migration to the North』

There are few cases of seeing that『Othello』 and 『Season of Migration to the North』 have to do with intertextuality according to previous research results in the field of literary criticism. So we make a comparative study of the intertextuality these two works in order to understanding of 『Season of Migration to the North』 precisely and specifically. Among the many textual theories, we have chosen and applied the concept of intertextuality of Tzvetan Todorov, and the concept of ‘Transtextuality’ which includes the five sub-concepts of Gérard Genette as research methodology. Based on Gérard Genette s ‘Transtextuality’ theory, we set up that the original text ‘Hypotext’ is Shakespeare s『Othello』, And ‘Hypertext’, which is the text that contains or absorbs the original text, set up al-Tayib Salih’s 『Season of Migration to the North』. As a result of the analysis, there was an intertextuality that the Sudanese writer in the 20th century after hundreds of years cited the name Othello in his work and rewrote for description about the confusion of Mustafa Sa eed’s identity which I am Othello, not Othello . In addition, the plot was quite similar to the plot of Othello Story, which was sometimes similar and sometimes distorted. Therefore, it was found that there was a mutual textuality between the two works. This researcher concluded that all these intertextualities leads reader·receiver who are al-Tayib Salih s『Season of Migration to the North』 to recall or to read the original text Shakespeare s『Othello』which is Hypotext, and then all these intertextualities helps understanding about ‘Hypertext’ 『Season of Migration to the North』.
