This article reviewed the works by the five prominent historians who paved the way for the history of emotions. Peter N. Stearns coined the “emotionology,” and reconstructed the American 20th century as a era of the coolness. William Reddy coined the “emotive,” and interpreted the French Revolution as an emotional event. Barbara Rosenwein coined the “communities of emotions,” and presented three emotional communities in the Early Middle Ages as witnesses. Joanna Bourke coined the “aesthesiology,” and showed that the emotions reflect and transform the power relationships. Finally, Ute Frevert illustrated the historicity of the emotions, and reformed the historiography of emotions by applying the methods of the conceptual history to the history of emotions.
