외국인 이주민에 대한 사회적거리감과 지역특성에 관한 탐색적 연구

An Exploratory Study on Social Distance and Regional Characteristics of Foreign Migrants

본 연구의 목적은 지역특성이 체류외국인에 대한 인식과 태도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 확인하는 것이다. 기존 연구에서 지역의 외국인 비중이나 거주자가 인지하는 환경은 외국인에 대한 사회적거리감에 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 다양한 지표로 표현되는 객관적 지역특성이 외국인에 대한 내국인의 인식과 태도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구는 그 중요성에 비해 많이 다루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 인구, 경제 특성, 물리적 시설 등을 포함한 자료를 병합함으로써 인지된 지역환경 뿐만 아니라 객관적 지역특성이 외국인에 대한 인식에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 인종마다 세부적인 차이가 있으나 도시화 수준은 낮을수록, 보행환경이 적절하지 않을수록, 외국인비중이 높을수록, 제조업 사업체수가 많을수록, 순인구유입이 높을수록 사회적거리감이 증가하는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러므로 다문화사회를 위한 지역정책은 외국인 개인뿐 아니라 외국인이 거주하는 지역과 환경을 고려하고, 지원할 필요가 있다. 특히 재정적 여건은 열악하고, 외국인의 비중이 큰 지역의 경우 광역ㆍ중앙 차원의 지원이 요구된다. 또한, 외국인 이주민에 대한 사회적거리감을 줄이기 위해서는 체류외국인의 적응교육뿐 아니라 내국인의 인식 개선을 위한 교육과 지역 커뮤니티의 지원이 필요하며, 생활환경 차원에서는 지역의 보행환경을 관리하고 개선하려는 노력이 필요하다.

The study examines the the effect of regional characteristics on the social distance to foreigners. Although previous studies have shown that the proportion of foreigners in the region and the subjective residential environment have a social distance to foreigners, but the effect of objective characteristics represented by various regional index produced conflicting results. We analyzed the effects of objective local characteristics on perceptions of foreigners as well as perceived local environment by merging data including population, economic characteristics, and physical facilities. The results of the analysis are as follows. Social distance to foreigners has different effects depending on ethnics and groups. And it was found that the lower the urbanization level, the worse the walking environment, the higher the proportion of foreigners, the more manufacturing enterprises, the higher the net population inflow, the more social distance.
