Mary is the Model of Discipleship in the Gospel of Luke

Many new themes and methods from various points of view have emerged in post-conciliar Mariology. Particularly, it is very encouraging to continue that study of Mariology in the area of ecumenical movement based on scripture. However, the Korean churches in the present time have shown a big difference in the understanding of Mary compared to the other churches in the world, nonetheless, there has not been yet set a theological study in order to narrow the gaps. It is confident that a study of the New Testament, which is the foundation of Mariology, is the prior methodology than doctrinal, liturgical, devotional dimensions of Marian studies. Although we don’t have an original material for a historical Mary, but we know who Mary is given by the Gospel material which is produced by the approach in the mystery of salvific history. The Gospel of Luke in the New Testament is a big heritage of Mariology. Luke’s Gospel highlights the role of Mary in the history of salvation, and his spotlight is very structured. Until now there are many faithful Marian images presented, and so I am confident that these images are connection with the discipleship of Jesus in Luke’s gospel. Therefore, a starting point of this study is the question whether Luke’s emphasis on Marian dimensions of a disciple corresponds with Luke’s eschatological perspective and Lucan discipleship. And, the direction of this study is that Lucan Mary is revealed as the model of discipleship of Jesus in light of Luke’s theological view and his expressions of literature.
