고소설 ≷장화홍련전≸은 20세기에서도 소설과 영화의 형태로 개작되어 대중들에게 수용되어 왔다. 고소설 ≷장화홍련전≸은 모성과 자매애라는 주제를 다루고 있어 근대 이후에 가족의 개념이 재구성된 상황에서도 활발하게 재생산될 수 있는 여지가 있었고 특히 여성 수용자들의 공감을 이끌어낼 수 있는 텍스트였다. 1930년대 근대 작가인 이선희와 임옥인은 고소설 ≷장화홍련전≸의 근대 독자로서 ≷장화홍련 전≸을 계모의 시선에서 재구성, 해체하는 다시쓰기를 시도한다. 이선희의 ｢연지｣ (1938)와 임옥인의 ｢후처기｣(1940)는 신여성 출신 계모의 시선에서, 여성에게 강요된 모성과 가정 내 약자였던 여성의 자의식을 탐색하는 소설이었다. 근대 여성 작가들이 고소설 ≷장화홍련전≸에 대한 일종의 해체적 읽기를 시도했다면 1972년 영화 <장화홍련전>은 고소설 ≷장화홍련전≸에 내재되어 있는 악녀의 처벌이라는 기본적인 스토리를 유지하면서도 여성적 소통방식과 자매애 그리고 상속에 대한 여성의 권리 등을 더욱 확대 부각시켰다. 이렇듯 고소설 ≷장화홍련전≸이 20세기적 이본들로 거듭날 수 있었던 것은 ≷장화홍련전≸이 모성과 자매애와 같은, 근대 가족 제도 안에서 보다 문제시 되었던 친밀성의 문제를 다루고 있었고 이러한 주제가 근대의 독자들에게 ≷장화홍련전≸의 20세기적 개작의 욕구를 불러 일으켰기 때문이다.
The classic novel Janghwa and hongryeon-jeon has been adapted in the 20th century into modern novels and movies. The acts of adaptation like deleting, adding, and altering the original text are produced by the active interpretation on the original text. Since Janghwa and Hongryeong-jeon deals with the topic of motherhood and sisterhood, this novel particularly winning sympathy of women readers and could be reproduced into other kind of genres like modern novels or film even after the conception of the family was changed. In the 1930s, modern writers Lee Sunhee and Lim Okin, who were the reader of classic novel Janghwa and Hongryeongjeon, also wrote modern versions rewriting and deconstructing original text. Their Novels-Rouge(｢臙脂｣) and The confession of a second wife(｢後 妻記｣) explored the self-consciousness of women and the problems of forced motherhood from the point of the stepmother. While these texts written by modern female writers was a sort of deconstructive reading about classic novel Janghwa and Hongryeong-jeon, movie Janghwa and Hongryeong-jeon made in 1972 was the adaptation maintaining the basic storyline of original text but enlarged on the aspects of women’s rights to inheritance, female communication, sisterhood.
