(In)compatability between relative clauses and topic constructions

이 논문은 주제어의 관계화에 대한 두 관점을 재고한다. 하나는 주제어 구성과 관계절 구성이 호환가능한지를 살피는 것이고 다른 하나는 주제어가 제한적 관계절로 관계화 될 수 있는가에 대한 것이다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 모든 주제어가 관계화 되는 것은 아닌데 이는 주제어 구성이 관계절 구성과 다른 특성을 갖기 때문이다. 주제어 구성은 정보화 구조의 관점에서 비제한적 관계절과 유사해 두 구성이 호환가능할 것으로 보이지만 주제어 구성은 비제한적 관계절과 달리 전체성 제약을 받지 않아 주제화가 가능하지만 관계화 되지 않는 예가 나타난다. 둘째, 두 가지 요건이 충족될 경우 주제어도 제한적 관계절로 관계화 될 수 있다. 즉, 주제어가 다른 주제어의 존재를 암시하는 대조 주제어이며 주제 간 대조가 한 영역 안에서 이루어지는 경우 해당 주제어는 제한적 관계절의 머리명사로 나타날 수 있다. 본 연구는 관계화 되지 않는 주제어에 대한 체계적인 설명을 제공하고 대조 주제어의 관계화를 다룸으로써 주제어의 관계화에 대한 이해를 돕는 데 그 의의가 있다.

This research explores two aspects regarding the relativization of topic NPs. One is whether there is compatibility between a topic construction and an RC construction. The other is whether a topic NP can be relativized only into a non-restrictive RC, because a topic NP is usually definite and identifiable. The findings show that the answers for both questions are no. First, it is pointed out that not all topic NPs can be relativized. This is because a topic construction is not under the exhaustiveness requirement: what is described in a topic comment does not have to be true for the referent of the topic NP exhaustively. Although similar to a topic construction regarding information structure, the non-restrictive RC requires what is described in an RC to be true for the referent of the head noun exhaustively. Second, it is illustrated that a topic NP can be the head noun of a restrictive RC. This is the case when two requirements are met: 1) a topic NP is contrastive with other topic NPs, and 2) the contrast among the topic NPs is made in the same domain. This study contributes to improving our understanding of the way in which topic NPs are relativized by providing systematic explanation for a topic NP that cannot be relativized and by shedding light on the relativization of a contrastive topic NP.
