Cam shaft which is a part of automotive engine is very essential to fuel injection timing. The study investigates fracture characteristics of the cam shaft which is made of surface hardening heat treated SM53C. The residual stress and Micro Vickers hardness were tested. The residual stress was run on Advanced Indentation system 3000 and the Micro Vickers hardness tested on MVK-G1. The test results shows that was the greatest compressive residual stress for 1mm and 2mm hardened depth were noticed in depth of 0.8mm and 1.0mm, respectively. The hardness of the cam shaft was improved from 260Hv to 750Hv after surface hardening heat treatment
