Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Silica-Based and Gum Arabic-Based Electro-Rheological Fluid

This thesis presents the physical characteristics of commonly used Silica and Gum Arabic type of the electro-rheological fluid (ER fluid) which are varying according to the intensity of electric field. For Silica ER fluid, silicon oil is used for nonconductive solvent. By differing the composition of the particles in the solvent weight ratio of 10% and 30%, and the viscosity of the solvent of 30cs and 100cs, shear stress & shear rate relationship, and dynamic yield stress are measured experimentally. To see the impact on the Gum Arabic ER fluid’s solvent weight ratio, Gum Arabic particles and transformer oil are used. And by differing the solvent weight ratio of 20% and 40%, experiments of Bingham characteristics of the ER fluid are conducted. Also, by applying the electric field from 1kV/mm to 3kV/mm by 0.5kV/mm on the ER fluid, the change of response characteristics is studied experimentally.
