Sintering Behavior of Ni Powder by Spark Plasma Sintering

The spark plasma sintering(SPS) process, that enables rapid sintering under the condition of lower temperature combined with pressure application in various environment, is proposed as a novel process of powder forming. The effects of various sintering conditions on the density of Ni powder compacts were investigated by observing the densification behavior and actual temperature of specimens, and the results are summarized as follows: The densification rate of powder compacts was very fast in spite of shorter process time(less than 10 min) compare to conventional sintering process. The relative density of sintered compact was 98 % when the powder compact was sintered at 800 ℃ for 1 min under 40 MPa pressure. The densification behavior was affected by heating rate of powder compacts, shape and size of raw powder. At 800 ℃ of die temperature, the temperature of specimen inside was 920 ℃.
