Crankshaft and bearing of large marine diesel engine can be damaged during operation. In the abnormal operation of the mechanisms, including misalignment of shaft and overload of bearings, excess heat will be generated by friction between the shaft and bearing system. Lubricating oil can be decomposed into fine oil mist near the friction surface. This oil mist is collected inside the crank chamber and it contains flammable gases such as hydrogen and acetylene. This oil vapor may explode in the crankcase and cause a huge damage for engine. In the SOLAS Convention, marine diesel engines over 2,250 kW output have to be equipped with oil mist detection system. In this paper, we proposed the Real-time Oil Mist monitoring system. which is integrated by infrared lighting-receive sensor for checking the Oil Mist and it is designed that Oil Mist Detector system.
