The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ recognition of English metaphors in a college level English classes, and to examine their perceptional status of English metaphors between differentiated English classes. In order to carry out the study an English survey was designed and conducted to 24 students. The survey items cover four general conceptual metaphors of English: ‘Life’, ‘Unimportance/Importance’, ‘Sadness/Happiness’, and ‘Mind’. Students‘ answers were individually analysed, and next, cross-compared with students’ level of English classes. The results of the survey show that the degree of students’ recognition or perception of the suggested English metaphors is slightly high, and there may be quite close correlation between the level of students’ general English abilities and the level of their English metaphor recognition. The results of this study imply several educational suggestions for utilizing English metaphors in EFL classes.
