A Study on the H2 Gas Pick-Up of Al-Alloy Melt During Full Mold Casting

The hydrogen gas pick- up problem that can occur during Full Mold Casting was investigated with reduced pressure test and practical Full Mold Casting, which was studied with the results of cast work for A356 alloy. The proper pressure cast of reduced pressure cast was determined by experiment not to use polystyrene and gas contents of the melt were calculated from results of density measurement. The results presented that the hydrogen pick-up increased along with the increased amount of polystyrene that was replaced by melting Al alloy, and the hydrogen pick-up was larger in the case of no degassed melts than that of degassed melts. So the hydrogen pick-up depended on the initial hydrogen content of the melt and the contact time of the melt with the decomposed gas phase. The mold evacuation decreased the hydrogen pick-up and increased the flow length of melt during Full Mold Casting.
