In aluminium based composites, many difficulties are associated with the traditional welding problems of the matrix alloy, such as high thermal expansion and conductivity, high solubility of gases in the molten state, solidification shrinkages and presence of oxide inclusions. Friction stir welding results in low distortion and high joint strength compared with other welding procedures, and is able to join all aluminium alloys that are considered as virtually not weldable with classical liquid state techniques. The comparative study on high cycle mechanical properties between Al6005-T6 friction stir welds and base metal have been performed and fracture mechanisms for the fatigue specimens were investigated. Although the lower mechanical properties than the corresponding base material, the FSW joints of Al6005-T6 achieved higher tensile and fatigue strength compared to the traditional fusion weld.
