Native English Instructors’ Perspective of English Education Culture in Korea

한국 영어교육 문화에 대한 원어민 영어 교사의 인식

이 논문은 다른 문화권에서 온 원어민 영어 교수자들이 한국의 영어교육 문화를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 연구하는 데 초점을 두었다. 한국 사람들은 경쟁이 심한 사회에서 영어 공부를 열심히 하도록 고무되고 있으나, 영어교육에 대한 만족도는 상대적으로 낮은 편이다. 이와 관련한 영어교육의 문제점을 심층적으로 파악하기 위해서 질적 연구를 시도하였다. 그 결과 인터뷰, 정기적인 그룹 미팅, 그리고 수업 참관 등을 통해 한국 영어교육의 현실을 알 수 있는 흥미로운 사실들을 발견할 수 있었다. 그 중 하나는 한국의 영어교육환경이 너무 경쟁적이거나 입시 또는 시험을 위주로 하고 있으며, 교수자나 학생은 뚜렷하지 않은 이유로 영어공부를 하고 있다는 것이었다. 또한 원어민 영어 교수자들은 한국의 사회문화적인 특징이 “영어 열병”이라는 용어를 만드는 데 많은 영향을 끼쳤다고 보았다. 이 연구는 한국 영어교육이 지닌 몇 가지 문제를 함축적으로 제시한다. 한국의 영어교육 시스템은 새로운 아이이어를 받아들이기 힘들어 하며, 짧고 요행적인 방법을 원하고, 결정 내리는 것을 어려워하며, 상하를 구분하는 데 익숙하다는 것이다. 그러한 문제점들을 해결하기 위해서는 첫째, 한국의 학생, 학부모, 그리고 교수자들이 영어교육의 중요한 목적을 찾기 위해 열린 마음을 가져야 하며 둘째, 보다 조심스럽게 창의적인 교수법을 모색해야 한 다. 그 과정 에서 한국 영어교육의 미래는 보다 긍정적인 방향으로 변화할 것이다.

This study aims to investigate how native English instructors from different countries perceive English education culture in Korea. The paper illustrates fundamental problems within English education and gives insight for better educational environments for Korean EFL students. Therefore, the study investigates how native English instructors from different countries perceive English education culture in Korea. To find better ways for English educational problems in Korea, the present paper conducted a qualitative study from February to August in 2016. Four native English instructors with different backgrounds participated in this study. With interviews, regular group meetings, and observations, the study found biases and attitudes towards English and reasons for learning English. In conclusion, Korean students, parents, and teachers should be more open-minded to discover main purpose of an English education and find more creative ways to teach literature classes.
